Dance

Trenzado marks the return of Victor Quijada to the stage as a dancer. In a poetic way, the work raises the question of what it is to be from everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

In Trenzado, American citizen of Mexican heritage and Canadian choreographer Victor Quijada revisits a certain nostalgia in order to push his creative language further. Built upon the themes of roots, boundaries, homeland and loss, the piece explores our physical and emotional limits when we face removal from home, lost connections, and reconstruction. It also addresses the hopes that come with starting new.

RUBBERBAND's new creation, Reckless Underdog, propels the company's achievements with fifteen dancers in a choreography of three acts.

The first act, inspired by classical ballet, redefines the rules of the pas de deux. The second deconstructs the break cypher in a sombre, oppressive atmosphere. The third, boldly experimental, distorts theatrical codes in an abstract, minimal, highly-coloured approach. For the creation of the music, director and choreographer Victor Quijada has called upon artists who have inspired him for years: Alaclair Ensemble and Kid Koala will create original pieces for Reckless Underdog, and Chilly Gonzales will give us access to previously unreleased pieces, remixed by Jasper Gahunia, a longtime musician collaborator of RUBBERBAND. Reckless Underdog will be premiered at Danse Danse series in April 2023.

15 dancers
Duration: to be confirmed

Victor Quijada is back, with ten dancer-athletes in top form. Ever So Slightly explores the behavioural mechanisms and reflexes we develop against the ceaseless flow of irritants that bombard us in our daily lives. Most of us long for calm and resilience, but how do we get to a zone where noise and aggressivity no longer have a place? Simultaneously delivering delicacy, brutality, finesse, and high-voltage action, the choreographer conveys all the energy contained in urgency, revolt, chaos, and flight.

Be it the music, the beauty, or the sense of connection, tango has won the hearts of dancers around the world. Originating in the 1880s along the Rio de la Plata, the natural border between Argentina and Uruguay, the dance form has since spread to the rest of the world. Across cultures and generations, this conversation between bodies enables people to meet in an "embrace". From Buenos Aires, dance company Social Tango Project, will tour Canada for the first time in April 2023 bringing their lively and passionate dance to us.

On tour in Canada, April 2023

With both humorous and serious moments, Vic's Mix is a kind of "best of" spanning the immense creative territory explored by Victor Quijada, extracting jewels from the choreographer's repertoire. In a remix of his own work, orchestrating the clash between urban pop and classical composition, Quijada goes further in his experiments defying notions of theatricality and audience expectations, while making sure that each body gravitating onstage in the highly athletic segments exemplifies the RUBBERBAND Method.
