C²D x CAN150: An Elemental Expedition

Territory represented: Canada, USA

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation in 2017, Canadian classical cello-piano ensemble Cheng2 Duo is creating an innovative collaboration of Canadian music and art. This 60-75 minute multidisciplinary live performance project will explore the vast diversity and richness of Canada’s artistic and geographical landscapes from coast to coast, both visually and aurally.

Dividing the country into five regions (Atlantic, Central, Prairies, West, and North), each region is represented by a contemporary classical composer who is currently writing a new featured work for cello and piano (each 10-15 minutes in length), inspired by the area’s particular landscape and natural elements. The complementing multimedia video backdrop will be an original creation by Normal, a Canadian production studio based in Montréal, which will include a compilation of various media by renowned Canadian contemporary and historical artists. The pairings of regions and elements are as follows:

  • Atlantic (rain/water) : JUNO award-winning composer Derek Charke
  • Central (fire/metal) : JUNO-nominated composer Jordan Pal
  • Prairies (wind/sky) : Vincent Ho, former composer-in-residence of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra
  • West (earth/mountain) : Rodney Sharman, former composer-in-residence of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra
  • North (snow/ice) : composer Carmen Braden, whose works were performed at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics

Given Ottawa’s significance of being both Canada’s capital city and the Cheng2 Duo’s hometown, the project will premiere at the National Gallery of Canada in June 2017. Allowing for flexible programming possibilities, this multidisciplinary live concert experience could then be toured in each of the country’s five regions and internationally, showcasing Canada’s rich artistic landscape and bringing worldwide exposure to Canadian artists.

In exploring the relationship between music and art, this project will reinforce our national identity in musical form while contributing to our cultural legacy.

French Feast

Territory represented: Canada, USA

Like the French language, the music of France is equally refined, elegant, and poetic. From the Baroque to Impressionist eras, France experienced dramatic revolution in its society and government, which directly influenced the development of art over 200 years. This program looks at the changing landscape of French music — which, despite its history, never lost its quintessential poise — from the palace of Versailles to the intimate salons to the public concert halls in Paris, with works by Louis Francœur, César Franck, Gabriel Fauré, and Claude Debussy. A historical exploration of various French soundscapes not to be missed!

The Russian Soul

Territory represented: Canada, USA

One cannot speak of Russian music without acknowledging the everlasting contributions of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Prokofiev, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Their masterpieces for the cello and piano reflect the entire spectrum of human emotions, from deep pain to overwhelming joy, touching the souls of listeners profoundly.

Besides sharing the same heritage, Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff also shared similar adversities and struggles during their lifetime, partly due to the Soviet Union’s political regime then. Music became the means through which they could channel their innermost thoughts and feelings, at a time when there was little freedom of thought or creativity. Both composers wrote only one sonata for cello and piano, and both works are monumental and influential in the history of music. Come experience the essence of the passionate Russian soul!

Songs and Dances from Spain

Territory represented: Canada, USA

This evocative program features vivid colours and rhythms from Spain, with solo and duo works by composers Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz, Pablo de Sarasate, Enrique Granados, and Gaspar Cassado. Traveling across the country through the music, experience the unique and bold flavours of each region, like musical tapas — at times the piano will transform into a guitar or castanets, while the cello imitates the voice and violin. Whether through their swooning melodies or their rhythmic grooves, the featured works will highlight the distinct flair that is so characteristic of the music of the Spaniards. Since many of the compositions are inspired and influenced by dance, the power of this energizing music may tempt you to leap from your seat!
